What is Somatic therapy?

Somatic therapy is a “top down,” body-based approach to healing that recognizes trauma is not only stored in the mind, but also within the nervous system and body. Many people who have experienced trauma notice physical symptoms such as chronic tension, anxiety, numbness, digestive issues, panic, fatigue, and/or hypervigilance. This happens because trauma can leave the nervous system stuck in survival state such as fight, flight, freeze, or fawn, making it hard to get out of it. Somatic therapy helps bring awareness to these patterns and gently supports the body in moving out of survival mode and into greater regulation and safety.

What does Somatic Therapy look like in practice?

In our work together, somatic therapy may include slowing down and noticing bodily sensations, emotions, breath, tension patterns, and nervous system responses in the present moment. Because trauma lives in the body, this approach focuses on building safety, connection, and capacity within yourself at a pace that feels manageable. Over time, somatic work can help reduce anxiety and trauma symptoms, strengthen your connection to yourself, and create a greater sense of grounding, resilience, and trust in your feelings and emotions.
